numist the fool
in 2002 a recall was issued for the frame on the Honda GL1800 (GoldWing), which required grinding and inspection of a weld on the frame for cracking and then replacement of the entire frame (if cracked) or extensive repair work involving even more grinding plus welding.

getting to the spot requires laying the bike down, which you can do without causing any damage by removing the mirror and laying the bike gently on the bar end, rear speaker unit, engine head guardrail, and luggage guardrail. it may look ungainly, but the shape of the guards combined with the extremely low center of gravity make it surprisingly easy to manage.

it takes a technician 30 hours to replace the frame (which itself costs just over $1,700). for comparison, a new ‘Wing starts at $23,000.
